Recently, the General Office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs ( MARA) issued the “Notice on the the Results of the China-FAO Special Contribution Award for Institutions and Individuals”. According to the Notice, the Foreign Economic Cooperation Center (FECC) was awarded the China-FAO Special Contribution Institution for South-South Cooperation and Zhu Zidong, member of FECC, won a special contribution personal certificate. The medals and certificates were issued jointly by the Minister of MARA Han Changfu and the Director-General of FAO, Graziano.

Entrusted by MARA, FECC has been responsible for the organization and implementation of the China-FAO South-South Cooperation Project since 2002. For more than ten years, FECC has attached great importance to the development of South-South agricultural cooperation, and promoted the sustainable development of South-South agricultural cooperation in terms of organizational structuring, system development, project management, and research planning. Besides, FECC has also organized and implemented 16 country projects successively, completed the planning and design of 8 country projects (to be implemented), and has made positive contributions to promote agricultural development and food security in the host country. In particular, in 2008 and 2014, FECC propelled the Chinese government to donate two trust funds to FAO for a total of 80 million US dollars to support South-South cooperation in agriculture, which helped South-South cooperation enter into a new stage of development.

At the same time, FECC regarded South-South agricultural cooperation as an important starting point for enhancing our international influence and discourse power. With the help of the South-South cooperation project platform, FECC promoted agricultural bilateral economic and trade cooperation, publicized and displayed the results of South-South cooperation projects, and disseminated the government’s policy proposition in agriculture and food security, establishing a good image of a responsible great nation of China. A number of South-South cooperation projects organized and implemented by FECC have been appreciated by the leaders of the host countries. Heads of state or government of Nigeria, Mongolia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Mali, Namibia and other host countries have visited the project sites and spoke highly of the professional ethics and performance of the Chinese experts and technicians. Ugandan President Museveni also sent a letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping, acknowledging the results of the South-South cooperation project and hoped to launch a new phase of the project. At present, China has become the country which made the largest contribution to FAO’s South-South cooperation, the country sent the largest number of experts to the project, and the country which made the most significant results.
